Saving Shackleton’s Ship Before Technology Reaches It

The wreck of Endurance, Sir Ernest Shackleton’s famous expedition vessel, may soon receive a level of protection never before granted to an underwater heritage site in Antarctica. At the 48th Antarctic Treaty Consultative Meeting (ATCM 48), parties agreed to forward a proposed management plan for the wreck to the Commission for the Conservation of Antarctic Marine Living Resources (CCAMLR), a key step toward eventual adoption of a formal protection measure.

Discovered in 2022 more than a century after it sank in the Weddell Sea, Endurance is already designated as Historic Site and Monument No. 93. Yet supporters of stronger safeguards argue that this status alone is no longer sufficient. The wreck’s precise location is now known, and advances in deep-sea robotics, autonomous vehicles and submersible technology are making access increasingly feasible. According to the UK Antarctic Heritage Trust, risks include accidental damage from subsea operations, unauthorised recovery of artefacts, tourism activity, lost fishing gear and the uncertain effects of climate-driven biological and chemical deterioration.

The proposed solution is designation as an Antarctic Specially Protected Area (ASPA), a status normally used to safeguard sites of outstanding environmental, scientific or historic value. An ASPA would introduce a permit system governing access and activities around the wreck. Researchers would be expected to justify visits, employ non-destructive methods wherever possible, and demonstrate that any work would not undermine the site’s historical or ecological significance.

The issue extends beyond maritime heritage. Endurance has become an artificial reef supporting distinctive marine life, making its protection relevant to both archaeology and biology. CCAMLR must therefore consider the implications for the surrounding marine environment, as well as potential interactions with fishing activities and conservation measures.

If the process is completed and adopted at the next stage of Treaty negotiations, Antarctica could gain its first specially protected underwater heritage area, establishing an important precedent for managing historic sites in an era of rapidly advancing ocean technology.
