As the last members of Belgium’s 2025-26 Antarctic expedition departed Princess Elisabeth Antarctica station in February, an important handover took place. Responsibility for one of Antarctica’s most advanced research facilities passed from people to machines.
The Princess Elisabeth station is operated by the International Polar Foundation (IPF). Before closing the season, the Belgian Antarctic Research Expedition (BELARE) team carried out a carefully planned transition designed to keep critical scientific observations running through the long Antarctic winter.
Preparing the station for months without a human presence involves far more than simply locking the doors. Expedition members inspected and secured electrical systems, communications equipment and autonomous scientific instruments. Glacier-supported annex structures were adjusted to account for environmental conditions, while solar energy infrastructure was protected against the harsh winter months. Water treatment systems were also shut down before departure.
The challenge is significant. During the Antarctic winter, Princess Elisabeth must continue operating in one of the most remote and hostile environments on Earth, facing extreme cold, powerful winds and complete isolation. Success depends on the reliability of automated systems, satellite communications and carefully designed engineering controls.
This annual transition highlights a growing trend in polar science: the increasing role of autonomous technologies in collecting data from regions where year-round human occupation is costly and difficult. Instruments left behind can continue monitoring atmospheric conditions, glaciological processes and other environmental variables long after field teams have returned home.
The final departure marked the conclusion of the 2025-26 BELARE season, which IPF officially closed on 16 February. Yet for many of the station’s scientific systems, the work is only beginning.
A key question for researchers will be how effectively these autonomous platforms performed over the winter. When the next expedition returns shortly, this southern spring, the condition of the station and the success of its winter data transmissions will provide an important test of the technologies increasingly supporting modern Antarctic science.
