Redeveloped Scott Base Set to Strengthen New Zealand’s Antarctic Science

The long-awaited redevelopment of New Zealand's Scott Base has taken a significant step forward, with Antarctica New Zealand signing the main construction contract with Wellington-based builder LT McGuinness.

The agreement marks the beginning of the project's delivery phase following an extensive review and redesign process. Earlier redevelopment plans were paused when costs exceeded the Government's approved funding, prompting a comprehensive reassessment of the programme. A revised business case received Cabinet approval in May 2026, and the project was formally cleared to proceed earlier this month.

The redevelopment will transform Scott Base into a modern Antarctic research station capable of supporting scientific and operational activities for decades to come. Plans include new accommodation and communal facilities, upgraded science and operations spaces, replacement of ageing utility infrastructure, and improved links between existing and new buildings.

Once completed, the station's footprint will expand from approximately 5,000 square metres to around 6,500 square metres. A new Base Services Building will form the centrepiece of the redevelopment, while the Hillary Field Centre will also be refurbished.

A major renewable energy upgrade is another key component of the project. Improvements to the existing wind farm, combined with enhanced battery storage capacity, are expected to increase energy resilience and stability for both Scott Base and the nearby United States McMurdo Station.

Antarctica New Zealand Chair Leon Grice described the contract signing as an important milestone for New Zealand's Antarctic future, noting that the project will preserve the country's permanent presence on the continent while providing modern facilities for scientists and support personnel.

Construction will take place across multiple Antarctic summer seasons, reflecting the logistical challenges of working in one of the world's most remote and demanding environments. Initial work during the upcoming season will focus on foundation piling and the shipment of materials needed for subsequent stages of construction.

Practical completion of the redevelopment remains scheduled for 2030.
